50 hour power outage
We were without power for about 50 hours, likely due to damaged power lines and not a part of the planned outages. Being without power this long was difficult but my family's biggest complaint was the lack of communication. Compared to previous outages, we did not get updates on the situation as documented below for nearly 48 hours. Getting follow up messages from the company every so often acknowledging the situation, setting expectations for a long outage, and even providing tips for dealing with it (like getting ice for perishable food) would have been better.
In talking to some of our neighbor friends, we heard that some people called the call center and were told that the company was not showing a power outage in our area. Perhaps this explains why we were not getting updates because their system was showing that we were fine.
Last, I saw in a Denver7 news story the following: "Xcel Energy, told Denver7 the company used an intense scientific analysis before deciding to shut off power to certain areas.” While I was not affected by the planned shut offs, this "intense scientific analysis" begs for further investigation. What was that analysis? The wording possibly suggests it could have been artificial intelligence. Perhaps not, but if it was, I would want to know that there was some level of human review.
Saturday at 4:14 P.M. I received these two messages:
XE Alerts: An outage may be impacting your location. More info at https://xcelener.gy/outagestatus
XE Alerts: Due to large scale outages in your area, we do not have an estimated restoration time right now. More info at https://xcelener.gy/restore
Then the next messages came on Monday at 12:45 P.M. (same messages):
XE Alerts: An outage may be impacting your location. More info at https://xcelener.gy/outagestatus
XE Alerts: Due to large scale outages in your area, we do not have an estimated restoration time right now. More info at https://xcelener.gy/restore
Power was restored at about 7:00 P.M. on Monday.
Thank you.
