More notice would have helped

This all took place while my wife was out of town, taking care of a sick relative. I was working during the week, stocked up on a number of easy to fix meals for me and my 15-year-old kid. We got a phone call three hours before the shutdown was to start, it went straight to message as the call was from an unfamiliar number. so it was lucky that I checked, often times those kind of calls are spam. The message said that power was to shut down in three hours, and that power was going to be out until noon the following day. There was not time to go to store and stock up on ice, so basically, we just unplugged everything from the wall, thought that our frozen food could probably survive for 24 hours even if the refrigerator was off. Then I went to stay with family in Denver for the night. The next day we started to see information that power would not be turned on at noon, but rather the outage was likely to persist until Monday. At that point we were already back home, so stayed in a house without heat or hot water for the night. I appreciate the desire not to have another experience like the Marshall fire but we wound up having to throw out $200 worth of food and be in extremely uncomfortable circumstances for longer than felt necessary. In the future I am hoping that there can be more advanced notice, and possibly something to reimburse for grocery/hotel expenses, as This does not feel sustainable to do this every spring, when the winds are like this.
